Daisies on the green – granny square tote bag pattern and bag assembly instructions

Daisies on the green tote bag

Since the release of the Daisy granny square bag, I’ve been so excited to make a traditional daisy tote bag! I’ve had this Stylecraft DK in Sage in my stash for a long time and I think it perfectly complements the daisies!

I have written up the pattern below if you want to have a go at making these for yourself!

Please note this page contains affiliate links which means if you purchase yarn from the link I will receive a small commission. I would only ever recommend yarn that I love and use myself!

You can get the downloadable PDF of the pattern on my Etsy shop.

Instructions

Round 1 – with first colour yarn, create a magic circle (step by step guide on my blog).

Ch2, make 11 dc into the circle. Join to the first stitch with a slip stitch and pull the tail tight to close the circle. Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 2 – with second colour yarn, join to the first dc and ch1. You will make a cluster into each stitch around. Follow instructions below.

4dc cluster = Yarn over your hook, insert the hook into the same stitch, pull through (3 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (2 loops on hook). Yarn over again, inset your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through (4 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (3 loops on hook). Yarn over again, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through (5 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (4 loops on hook). Yarn over again, inset your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through (6 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (5 loops on hook). Yarn over pull through all 5 loops. Chain 1.

Repeat 11 more times in each stitch around until you have 12 4dc clusters. When you have made your final cluster, chain 1 and join with a slip stitch to the first cluster. Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 3: with outer colour yarn, join to the chain 1 space in between two petals.

Ch3, make 2 dc into the same space (counts as 3dc).

Make 3 dc into the next ch1 space (between petals)

Make 2 tr crochet, ch2, 2 tr crochet into the next ch1 space – this will make your first corner

Make 3dc in each of the next two ch1 spaces.

2 tr, ch2, 2 tr in the next ch1 space (2nd corner)

Make 3dc in each of the next two ch1 spaces.

2 tr, ch2, 2 tr in the next ch1 space (3rd corner)

Make 3dc in each of the next two ch1 spaces.

2 tr, ch2, 2 tr in the last ch1 space (4th corner)

Join to top of ch3 in first chain 1 space with a slip stitch.

Round 4: continue in outer colour yarn. Ch3 (counts as dc). Dc in each stitch around until you reach the corner. 3dc into the corner ch2 space. Repeat around. Join to top of first ch3. Fasten off with invisible join.

For this pattern I have made 9 granny squares for the front and a plain crochet back of the bag. If you want daisies on both sides of the bag you will need to make 18 squares to make two sides. You will then need to sew the two sides together and continue on in the pattern from “Joining the handles”.

You can also make your bag bigger or smaller by adding additional granny squares to the top or sides!

Assembling your bag

You may find it useful to pin your squares together with stitch markers

Sew the granny squares together in the layout shown above. I sewed down vertically and then horizontally but it’s really up to you. You can also use slip stitch or single crochet to join.

Make 1sc in each stitch around to tidy up the edges, finishing at a corner. Do not fasten off – you will now continue working around to make the back.

Making the back of the bag

To make the back of the bag you will work in rows starting in the corner and working across one side of the bag.

I have chosen to join to the sides of the bag as I go using slip stitch. If you prefer not to do this you can just make a chain the same width as your front piece and Hdc back and forth in rows until you reach the length of the bag and then sew the two pieces together.

Row 1 – make 1 Hdc in each stitch across the side of the bag. When you reach the corner, slip stitch into the next stitch on the side of the bag, slip stitch again into the next stitch. Turn.

Row 2 – skip the first two slip stitches and Hdc in each stitch across until the end. Slip stitch into the next stitch on the side of the bag, slip stitch again into the next stitch. Turn.

Continue as shown in rows 1 and 2 until you reach the top of the bag and both sides are joined. Do not fasten off – you will continue around the top of the bag to join the handle.

Top tip – you may find it useful to mark your first and last stitch so that you’re clear which are the stitches and which are the slip stitches.

Joining the handle

You will now work across the top of the bag in rounds to join the handle.

Round 1: sc in each stitch around, slip stitch into first sc, ch 1, turn.

Round 2-3: dc in each stitch around, slip stitch into first dc, ch1, turn.

At the end of round 3, slip stitch to join. Slip stitch in next 2 stitches

Row 1 – Ch 85, join with slip stitch to opposite side of the bag. Slip stitch into the next stitch. Turn. You can adjust your chain and strap length to suit your style by adding or removing chains.

For a longer/crossbody strap chain approximately 175 (you can measure this as you go to make sure it’s the right length)

Row 2 – Sc in each ch across. Slip stitch into the base of the chain and into the next stitch. Turn.

Rows 3-7 Back loop single crochet in each stitch across, slip stitch into the base of the handle, slip stitch into the next stitch. Turn.

To finish slip stitch into the base of the handle and into the next stitch and fasten off. Weave in your ends.
