  • Treble crochet = tr
  • Cluster = 4dc together – detailed instructions below

Instructions

Round 1 – with first colour yarn, create a magic circle (step by step guide on my blog).

Ch2, make 15 dc into the circle. Join to the first stitch with a slip stitch to first dc and pull the tail tight to close the circle. Break yarn and fasten off.

Round 1

Round 2: with second colour yarn, you will now make 16 puff stitches in each stitch around the circle with a ch1 between each stitch. Detailed description of the puff stitch below.

Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, (3 loops on hook), repeat this 3 times until you have 9 loops on the hook, yarn over pull through all 9 loops (you may need to do this one loop at a time or wiggle your hook to make sure you pull through all 9 loops). Ch1.

Round 3 – with third colour yarn, you will now make 16 4dc clusters in each ch1 space between the puff stitches (see photo below) with a ch2 between each cluster. Detailed description of 4dc cluster below.

4dc cluster = Yarn over your hook, insert the hook into the same stitch, pull through (3 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (2 loops on hook). Yarn over again, inset your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through (4 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (3 loops on hook). Yarn over again, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through (5 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (4 loops on hook). Yarn over again, inset your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through (6 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through first two loops (5 loops on hook). Yarn over pull through all 5 loops. Chain 2.

Round 4 – with fourth colour yarn, join yarn in any ch2 space between two 4dc clusters.

Ch3 (counts as 1dc), make 2 dc into the same space (counts as 3dc in total).

In the next ch2 space, make 3hdc.

In the next ch2 space, make 3dc.

In the next ch2 space, Make 2 tr crochet, ch2, 2 tr crochet – this will make your first corner

*In the next ch2 space, make 3dc.

In the next ch2 space, make 3hdc.

In the next ch2 space, make 3dc.

In the next ch2 space, Make 2 tr crochet, ch2, 2 tr crochet – this will make your next corner.*

Repeat from * to * until you reach the first 3dc. Join to the top of the ch3 in your first 3dc with a slip stitch.

Assembling the bag

To assemble your bag you will need to sew your squares together as shown in the photo below. The squares on the sides and the bottom will fold in half and be sewn to the back piece!

Joining the handle

Round 1: join yarn to one of the granny squares on the side of the bag. Make 1 sc in each stitch and in each ch2 space until you reach the top point of the bag (see photo below). Make 3dc into the ch2 space at the top point of the bag. Place a marker on the third dc. Sc around until the top point of the next square. Make 3dc into the ch2 space at the top point of the bag. Place a marker on the first dc. Repeat around the other side of the bag. Join to first sc. chain 1.

Round 2: *Sc into the back loop of each sc around until you reach the marked stitch. Sc into this stitch. Chain 55. Skip the stitches in the middle and sc into the next marked stitch on the next peak* Repeat from * to * back loop sc into the remaining stitches. Join to first sc. chain 1.

For a longer/crossbody strap chain approximately 120 (you can measure this as you go to make sure it’s the right length)

Round 3: *Back loop sc into each stitch around until you reach the chain 55. Sc into the stitch at the base of the chain and in each stitch of the chain, sc at the base of the chain on the other side* back loop sc around. Repeat from * to *. Join to first sc. chain 1.

Round 4-5: Back loop sc in each stitch around. Joining to the first sc and chaining 1. On the last round join with an invisible join and fasten off. Weave in your ends.

Good luck making these squares and assembling the bag! Please tag me in your finished work!
